Volunteer Opportunity

Join civic minded volunteers who use and value the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail (the nine-mile ribbon of green that connects residential communities to parks, recreational and cultural attractions in Northern New Castle County) and the New Castle Industrial Track Trail (the 1.75 mile rail-trail connecting many suburban New Castle communities to the City of New Castle).

Two to three hours of teamwork can make a significant improvement in the trail experience for those who walk, run or bicycle the trail. Bring work gloves, hand clippers or loppers, a rake, safety shoes and glasses. It is recommended that individuals choose among the following activities according to their talents, interests and abilities. Training is provided by work crew captains, and State of Delaware park naturalists or maintenance crew members.

Volunteers may:

• Remove trash.
• Selectively remove or trim underbrush along the first 3-6 feet that border the trail so that sightlines are improved and safety hazards are removed.
• Cut back vines and other invasive species that impact the native species growing along the trail.
• Trim low-hanging tree limbs that block bicyclist from using the trail.
