Junction & Breakwater Trail

Visitors who frequent the Delaware beaches have hopefully had the opportunity to walk or bike the amazing Junction and Breakwater Trail that runs between the resort towns of Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. The 12-foot-wide crushed stone trail totals just over six miles and features breathtaking views of pristine marshlands and beautiful woodlands. As great as the trail is, it is still a work in progress. While the main body of the trail is in place, much work has yet to be done to provide seamless and well-designated connections between both Rehoboth and Lewes. Furthermore, the true potential of the trail has yet to be realized. For many years now, local and state trail enthusiasts (including Delaware Greenways) have advocated the extension of this trail to Georgetown. The corridor for this extension already exists in the form of a short distance rail line that runs from Lewes to Georgetown. There are also opportunities to connect Georgetown to Milton and Ellendale.

An important advocate for the extension of the Junction and Breakwater trail to Georgetown has been the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT). DELDOT made conversion of this rail line (which they own) to either a rail to trail or rail with trail system a top priority in their Railtrail facility master plan. Delaware Greenways has been in conversations with DELDOT to launch a public outreach and facility design process to make this trail extension a reality. Delaware Greenways has begun to inventory the existing trail system between Rehoboth and Lewes to determine the costs of completing capital construction to properly connect the two towns. We are also focusing on what the long term annual operating expenses will be to properly maintain it for all user groups.

Delaware Greenways is now forming a committee to help with the efforts above and become a support and advocacy group for a complete trail system that connects Rehoboth, Lewes, Georgetown and, ultimately, points west.
