Hockessin Greenway

Delaware Greenways is planning to add a greenway along Valley Road, connecting Old Lancaster Pike to Swift Park and Lantana Square/Tweeds Park. The plan, formulated as part of a 2003 greenway study of the Hockessin area, is designed to provide a safe connection between one end of Valley Road and the other. The greenway would be a paved pedestrian and bike pathway along the side of the road, wider than a sidewalk to accommodate bikers and walkers. It would provide a much safer route than the road shoulder pedestrians must use now.

Delaware Greenways chose to explore the Valley Road connection now because of its simplicity - it would probably only require some road widening and striping. However, feasibility remains a question because we're still unsure if Valley Road can be widened. Funding is another question, though the project could be paid for through the federal Transportation Enhancement Program. In that program, 80 percent of the funding comes from the federal government while the other 20 percent is provided by the state.

In the future, Delaware Greenways would like to build a path connecting Yorklyn to the Old Lancaster Pike, especially once the former NVF site is turned into state parkland.
