HISTORY

In 1990, Delaware Greenways planned the First Greenway in the First State-the Northern Delaware Greenway. The project began with a vision to link existing parkland between the Delaware River and the Brandywine River by acquiring critical parcels of open space to create a linear park just north of Wilmington.  The construction of a hiking and biking trail through the interconnected parkland was planned and is now -- more than 15 years later -- nearly complete.  The Northern Delaware Greenway has inspired many similar initiatives throughout the state of Delaware.

Today, Delaware Greenways leads grassroots efforts throughout New Castle County and the state, leveraging public and private investment for greenways and trails, and catalyzing the development of policies and initiatives to conserve and protect open space, create livable and enduring communities, and preserve scenic landscapes (see our current projects).

WHAT ARE GREENWAYS?

Greenways are linear corridors of open space that can be used for conservation or recreation. They come in many different forms and may include stream corridors, abandoned railroad rights of way, scenic highways, greenbelts around cities or towns, and riverfront walks.  Due to their linear nature, trails often follow greenway corridors.  Because of this, the term 'greenway' has become synonymous with walking paths and trails that are not fully contained within the larger county, state, or municipal parks.

Though in many cases they are not officially part of a park systems, these 'greenway trails' provide a safe and enjoyable place to walk, hike, and bike and provide close-to-home recreational opportunities for community residents.
